ACCOMMODATION As you might imagine, in any offshore location where taxes are lenient and VAT does not exist, accommodation can prove expensive. Recently a backpackers hostel has opened in St Martin and with a lot of searching, long and short-term holiday lets are available. Other options are small, medium and large hotels, bed and breakfast accommodations or rented rooms in houses belonging to local companies or individuals.
SOCIAL SECURITY You must apply for a social security number before you commence work on Jersey. To do this you have to apply in person at the Social Security offices in St Helier and you will need to give the name and address of your future employer.
MOBILE PHONES Having a mobile phone will make it much easier for recruitment agencies to contact you. Things move very quickly in temporary markets, and those who we can't get hold of will unfortunately miss out. It might be better to start with a Pay as You Go deal, rather than get tied down to an expensive contract right from the start. It might even be possible to just get a new SIM card for your current mobile but this is something that is worth checking before you get to Jersey. Having a mobile phone is also handy for sorting out accommodation, personal safety and is great for organising your social life.
BANK ACCOUNTS For temporary workers opening a bank account on Jersey may prove a virtual impossibility so it is wiser to organise your bank account before you come to the island.
GOING OUT Good food has been one of Jersey’s attractions for many years and the Island has built up an international reputation for its range of restaurants and cooking styles, which continues to impress visitors and locals alike.
A friendly welcome, the widespread use of fresh local produce, interesting and varied menus together with outstanding value all provide a dining experience to remember – whether it be in a simple beach café, a family friendly brasserie, a traditional country pub or a gourmet restaurant.
Jersey boasts numerous pubs, nightclubs, sports and leisure centers, golf clubs, theatres and places of interest a good site to checkout is www.jersey.co.uk.
